Northumbrian Police have arrested two men and recovered £20,000 worth of stolen goods after an investigation that began on eBay.

Suspicions were aroused initially after reports of a seller with large quantities of new items being sold way below market value. With assistance from eBay, police traced the seller to a residential address in Sunderland, and raided his house, discovering a range of stolen goods from alcohol and perfume, to copies of Microsoft Vista, which had been sold for less than a third of their RRP.

Detective Inspector Graeme Rowlings said that anyone considering selling stolen goods via eBay “will not get away with it.” He added that “it was only a matter of time before criminals started to use eBay. eBay are aware of that and have trained staff to monitor the site. They work very closely with our officers.”
