Post Offices strike this morning

This post was written in July 2007; specific information contained within it may be out of date.

Before you lug your weekend’s orders down to the Post Office today, you might want to check it’s actually open: some of the UK’s main Post Offices are on strike until noon today. PO counter workers are protesting about plans to move post offices to within WHSmith stores. An RM spokesman said that around 13 main post offices are affected, though there seems to be no published list of which these are. Sub-post offices are unaffected.

The Communication Workers’ Union fears that the move to WHSmith will cost around 1500 jobs, and mean reduced pension provision for workers who do stay on. This is a seperate dispute to Friday’s RM strike over pay and working conditions.

Spoke to the staff in my local one (Grays) on Friday when sorting out the car tax.

Every single member of staff has taken the redundancy package, so when WHSmiths opens it doors to the Post Office, it will be totally staffed by inexperienced newcomers.

    It’s going to be carnage…
