Avatars for blog comments

by Sue Bailey

This post was written in December 2007; specific information contained within it may be out of date.

Amongst other bits of fiddling about today, I’ve installed support for gravatars, that is, avatars to go with your blog comments. Gravatars can appear next to your comments on any site that has them available, not just on TameBay - and if you have multiple online personae, you can even configure different avatars to use with different email addresses.

As well as being a bit of fun, I know we have a few commenters on here who share the same name, so hopefully this might help distinguish between them! If you want to sign up, all you have to do is go to gravatar.com and upload your image. If you want your website logo or something commercial, that’s fine by us, but we do ask that your avatar conforms to a “PG” rating or lower.

And if you want to see how it looks, I’ll leave a comment below. Hope to see your avatar there too!

    Hi Sue,

    Here is our avatar (hopefully!).

What did you upgrade on WordPress? We need to eventually upgrade to 2.3, but we are a bit apprehensive. Not sure how our pretty theme will like the new WordPress.

    Ohhh your avatar worked :-)
I’ll let Sue answer the techie bit

  5. Chris Dawson on December 15th, 2007 12:39 am

Woohoo Lynne, you have a gravatar! :-)

    @ Lizard Wisdom:
Primarily I upgraded to 2.3.1. As we were still on 2.0.something :O I thought that everything might end up completely broken, but actually, the way that WP separates form and function, now having looked into it more carefully, I think that’s pretty unlikely to happen.
    My top tips:

    ~ read http://codex.wordpress.org/Upg.....s_Extended
~ do what it says :-)
~ if you have created your current theme by editing Kubrick rather than making a new one (you haven’t, but I have :-D), then make sure “themes” doesn’t get overwritten.
~ reactivate plugins one at a time. Google Sitemaps breaks 2.3.1.

Tis not nearly as scary as I’d expected. Nor is it as scary as my next task, upgrading the forum to PHPBB3!

Sod running websites and this blog malarky for a game of soldiers
it looks far too complicated and time consuming
I will stick to dear old ebay and make money

  12. Sue Bailey on December 15th, 2007 12:41 pm

eBay for money, North, but blogs and websites for fun (and some money). :-p

  13. northumbrian on December 15th, 2007 1:24 pm

    WHATS FUN?

  14. Sue Bailey on December 15th, 2007 1:31 pm

Something you need to have more of :-p

  15. Chris Dawson on December 15th, 2007 1:52 pm

Aww go on Norf, give blogging a go. I have a sneaking suspicion that your musings could be a very very amusing read :D

  16. northumbrian on December 15th, 2007 3:03 pm

    Chis
    would not dream of it
I would get into more bother than the teacher and the Teddy bear

  17. Kate on December 16th, 2007 1:45 am

Looks too complicated for me. For once I think I might just agree with North.

At least I would if my posts didn’t keep getting lost in the spam folder.

  18. Dan Wilson on December 16th, 2007 1:41 pm

    Testing the avatar. :O)

  19. Josordoni on December 16th, 2007 2:06 pm

oh Dan! I like the link…..

(off to try to do the same to mine…)

  20. Josordoni on December 16th, 2007 2:18 pm

…. which I have just realised alreadu has one anyway..

    DOH…..as you were……

  21. Dan Wilson on December 16th, 2007 3:19 pm

Does it take time for them to approve my avatar then? :o)

  22. Sue Bailey on December 16th, 2007 3:27 pm

Dan, what rating did you put on your avatar? If you’ve told Gravatar.com that it’s xxx-rated or summat, it won’t show up here. That’s the explanation that springs to mind; it didn’t take any time for mine and Mountie’s to show up yesterday.

  23. Josordoni on December 16th, 2007 3:33 pm

It took mine about 5 minutes the first time round, straight away when I changed it.

But I would have thought Dan’s should be here by now… :-(

  24. Josordoni on December 16th, 2007 3:34 pm

and as I speak… here it is!!

  25. Sue Bailey on December 16th, 2007 3:34 pm

Et voila, there he is - because I’ve changed allowable avatars to X-rated :O

  26. Josordoni on December 16th, 2007 3:38 pm

Omigod…. I cannot bring myself to imagine what you are going to get now avatars can be X rated….!!!!!!!!

  27. Sue Bailey on December 16th, 2007 3:39 pm

If people abuse it, it goes - easy. I’ve got enough to deal with with spam and crap without anyone taking the piss with comment avatars :-(

Considering ratings are self-selected, I guess they’re pretty meaningless anyway.

  28. Jade on December 16th, 2007 3:40 pm

boing boing, to the top of the league as of 16/12/07 anyways! Sorry to non footie fans, still showing my Black Country roots with my avtar choice!

  29. Sue Bailey on December 16th, 2007 3:41 pm

    Nice one Jade :-D

  30. Jade on December 16th, 2007 3:43 pm

    Baggies sypathiser Sue?

  31. Chris Dawson on December 16th, 2007 3:49 pm

Dan set his avatar to “x” rated? :o

He must have done what I did the first time around :D

  32. Sue Bailey on December 16th, 2007 3:54 pm

:o Jade, no!!! Don’t let my brother hear you say that…
    Blades all the way :-D

  33. Josordoni on December 16th, 2007 3:54 pm

What, are you naked really in your avatar that you needed to X rate yourself?

Get your hat and red coat back on!

  34. Jade on December 16th, 2007 4:03 pm

But Sue you now have the most inept manager that has ever “graced” the footballing world. He is so tactically naive that it’s almost a joke! And I’m saying that as an Albion fan who adored him when he played for us (we sold him to Man Usa) he was an absolute legend, but when he came back as a manager I have never witnessed such a load of dross week in week out, its why I gave up my season ticket! I felt really sorry for all the fans of United

  35. Jade on December 16th, 2007 4:03 pm

the Sheffield Utd that is, I don’t feel sorry for Man Usa fans.

  36. Dan Wilson on December 16th, 2007 6:15 pm

Hmm, think I set it as G-rated. For it is. ;o)

  37. suz on December 18th, 2007 7:51 pm

    Did it work?

  38. suz on December 18th, 2007 7:52 pm

    Nope…..
    Pressing submit might help!

  39. Sue Bailey on December 18th, 2007 8:58 pm

    Well done Suz :-D

  40. Suz on December 18th, 2007 9:31 pm

    Hurrah! Thanks Sue
Was convinced it wasn’t going to work - seems to take a little time to catch up,

    :)
Was thinking I was going to be the only peep who couldn’t do it!

  41. Suz on December 25th, 2007 12:02 am

Are you allowed to have web addresses in your avatar Sue and Chris ? Or should I just have the DC4U bit without the .co.uk?

    Thanks
    Suz x

  42. Chris Dawson on December 25th, 2007 12:11 am

So long as any web address is to a respectable site there’s no problem, no different to having your posting name linked to a website :-)

  43. Sue Bailey on December 25th, 2007 11:31 am

Suz, not only are you allowed - you’re positively *encouraged* to link to either your eBay shop or your website. As most people who read TameBay are eBayers and/or ecommerce merchants, I think we all like to have a nosey at what each other are selling. :-D

  44. Suz on December 25th, 2007 12:32 pm

    Hi Both
Thanks for that and cheers for you support.

I am thrilled - logo was finished Christmas Eve late, and the website link launched. Just had to fill the shop on the website and off I go, Business will be a year old in feb, and it is so exciting.
Happy Christmas to you both and all Tamebay peeps
    Suz x
