HMRC self assessment website down

by Chris Dawson

This post was written in January 2008; specific information contained within it may be out of date.

On the last day for submitting and paying tax returns for the 2006-2007 financial year the HMRC self assessment website has crashed! It simply displays a message “The Self Assessment on line system is temporarily unavailable to some customers. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are working to restore the service as soon as possible”

If you’ve not submitted your tax return online but were planning to do so today it may be worth contacting HMRC direct, although I suspect their phone lines are exceptionally busy.

HMRC have not indicated if there will be an extension for submitting tax returns or if late submission fines will be waived.

(Many thanks to John from ChannelAdvisor for the info)

Just a follow up to confirm. From HMRC website

    “SA Online filing service problems
HMRC’s Self Assessment Online filing service has experienced technical difficulties today, which has meant that some tax payers have experienced difficulties filing online. The system is now rapidly returning to normal levels of service. A record number of 3.6 million taxpayers have already successfully filed online.

HMRC takes any disruption of service very seriously and to reflect this no-one who files electronically or by paper by midnight Friday 1 February 2008 will face a penalty.

We very much regret any inconvenience this may have caused.

So how long until the disk with 3.6 million people’s details on it goes missing in the post?

A person I know today, who was unable to complete online today, rushed around and filled in a manual form. And posted it, so it will be late.

Now IR advise an extension. BUT, my friend will be fined, as paper copies need to be there today.

    Loose, loose….
