eBay notification preferences spam sellers

by Chris Dawson

This post was written in February 2008; specific information contained within it may be out of date.

eBay have made a change to notification preferences and started sending sellers “eBay Fixed Price Listing End”. I was alerted when a seller contacted me asking how to turn off eBay emails, and then when this evening when my own listings started to end my inbox filled up with eBay spam.

Now I know some sellers like email notifications, but personally I don’t. I turned them off in the past so I should no longer receive end of item emails or even item sold emails. The change has occured in the previous 24 hours and has overridden my previous settings.

A quick browse to My eBay > Notification Preferences > Selling Activity shows a new view with most options greyed out with the option “Real Time”. I still have the “Item did not sell” and “Item sold” options set to “None”, but I’m no longer able to disable other options.

Seller Notifications

If you’re a seller and have in the past turned email notifications off for most eBay events stand by for a shock. Your inbox is about to be filled with what you’ll probably class as junkmail.

Eagle eyed Sue has spotted that the URL for the Notification Prefererences contains MyEbayBeta in the middle so it may be a transient problem, at least I hope so!

Since I noticed the change earlier this afternoon, I’ve had an welcome surge of notifications that I previously switched off (like I’m not glued to my Selling Manager Pro half the day!)… let’s hope it is a bug!

Can be if you like. Damn, how do I get the tune out of my head?

All I can say is am I glad I bought MailWasher to deal with eBay junk mail and other spam

Mind you… for something new it’s a bit out of date - Seller Cross promotions disappeared from the UK back in August 2007 so it’s highly unlikely anyone will get the “Seller cross-promotion request” email :D

I have been going around in circles with the new beta settings since this afternoon when I began to receive item ended emails. I wondered why I was getting them. I can’t seem to turn it off either
I hope it gets fixed soon as I get enough rubbish already.

Yup, I’ve been getting hit with these all day myself on ending Fixed Price Items — a little heavier than would be expected too until I realized today was the end day for last weeks 20 cents sale.

I never saw that screenshot shown above–I have “Preferences” under “My Account” in my eBay, and only when I click on “Preferences” does an extra link to “Notification Preferences” appear (this is still under “My Account”). I click on “Notification Preferences” and receive one of those red-lettered eBay notices saying eBay is temporarily down and to check the Announcement boards for any reference to the problem.

That all seems to be back to normal as I check now though.

Just a little extra pain today, but of course when I saw those 75+ emails when I woke up this morning I had that momentary second of panic that my account had been hacked.

The good news is it’s all back to normal on my account today too! Whatever they turned on in the myebaybeta has been turned off again

Thunderbird has a very good spam system built in.
