“Entire towns” go phishing, says eBay

eBay have criticised law enforcement agencies in Romania for not doing more to stop phishing. Mark Lee, trust and safety manager for eBay UK, [where's Rambo?!] said that there “no fear of real punishment” for internet scammers in countries like Romania, Russia and China; “there are towns in Romania where the entire focus is on sites like eBay as the main source of income.”

Last year, eBay in partnership with law enforcement agencies, ran a campaign to catch Romanian phishers. As many of the country’s policing resources are concentrated in the capital Bucharest, they found backlogs of up to 200 eBay fraud-related cases in some smaller towns. And, as the Times reported, when eBay scamming is the town’s principal industry, there’s little incentive to close it down.

I know people can go through proxys, but can ebay not blocked any Romanian IP from accessing the site?

At lease Ebay have identified the “enemy” now, which is a step forward.

How to deal with that enemy is now the big question :-)

I think that’s the point, Blighty Mark - these guys are good. And I guess for one thing, Classic Mark, they need something as profitable to do. If I were eBay, I’d employ Vladuz and friends as security consultants.
