Did eBay mean to put PayPal in charge?

by Chris Dawson

This post was written in May 2008; specific information contained within it may be out of date.

Browsing the new help pages for transaction problems, (which are actually quite good for both novice buyers and sellers) I couldn’t help but chuckle at the final step for “My buyer didn’t pay

There appears to be a mistake with the final step being “PayPal’s final decision” which I’m sure should actually read “You may be eligible for a final value fee credit”. (That’s unless PayPal can now adjudicate on cases where a buyer never actually paid? )

This move was an inadvertant presage of things to come.

Soon the only allowed payment method on eBay “venues” will be PayPal - to improve security and the user experience (plus eBay’s profits). Therefore PayPal will the final arbiter of whether buyers have paid or not, and thus if a FVF is allowed.

I’m with Dee on this one (and seeing as I have a buyer right now claiming a bounced echeque should let them off a UI strike, it’ll be interesting to see how this pans out…).
