New VP to focus on third party developers
by Chris Dawson
There’s a change in the management responsible for the technology that eBay runs on. Matt Carey, eBay’s Chief Technology Officer since December 2005 is to leave the company to join The Home Depot.
Joining eBay is Mark Cargoes from BEA Systems, who takes on a newly created role as Senior Vice President, Platform. eBay announced at at the developers conference in June that they would open up the eBay platform and allow third party applications to be embedded in Selling Manager. Mark’s role will be to oversee global platform strategy to enable these third party applications to be built and integrated.

Interesting move. We’re hopeful that this gives Project Echo a much needed global kick start.
we had interesting survey from ebay today exploring and asking questions about a global ebay site where all international offerings from all ebay sites ,are in one place , shipping packaging postage prices etc etc
wonder if this weapons grade chappie is just the start
“the technology that eBay runs on”
I would say that is rather strong
Stumbles along from one part not working to the next would be more accurate.

I think thats a little unfair ebay given the complexity of the site,
we use ebay most days all day, cant really remember the last time there was a major problem with the actual site,
apart from the odd niggle that either was fixed quickly or we worked around,
nothing at all has stopped us listing and selling in the last 5 years
before that there were a few nail biting moments . hoping your item completed before the site crashed
It’s sort of off topic but a Global items site would make enormous sense.
The Mark Cargoes appointment is more about maximising (& why not) their income stream from third party software tools/widgets that will appear inside places like SMP or (in time) MyEbay/TL/etc.
The “”" bit in the post above should have contained
“we had interesting survey from ebay today exploring and asking questions about a global ebay site where all international offerings from all ebay sites ,are in one place , shipping packaging postage prices etc etc”
#5 If you could stick a bath in a jiffy bag I would agree with you.
You know why they called it “Echo” right? Rim shot. Hooya. Because by the time they get it out there won’t be any 3rd parties left to care.
